A classic Brazilian dessert made with sweetened condensed milk, cocoa powder, and butter, resulting in rich, fudgy chocolate balls coated in chocolate sprinkles. Perfect for parties or a delicious treat any time.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients:

  • 1 (14 ounces / 400 grams) can sweetened condensed milk
  • 4 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 pinch salt

Coating:

  • Chocolate sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Combine Ingredients: Gather a small saucepan and combine sweetened condensed milk, unsweetened cocoa powder, a pinch of salt, and unsalted butter, whisking the ingredients until smoothly integrated.
  2. Cook Mixture: Position the saucepan over medium-low heat, continuously stirring the mixture with a wooden spoon to prevent scorching and ensure even cooking.
  3. Thicken Mixture: Maintain consistent stirring until the mixture transforms into a thick, fudge-like consistency, which typically takes approximately 12 minutes. The mixture is ready when you can briefly see the bottom of the pan after dragging the spoon across its surface.
  4. Cool Mixture: Carefully transfer the rich chocolate mixture to a flat plate, spreading it evenly to accelerate cooling and allow it to reach room temperature, which takes about 45 minutes.
  5. Roll Brigadeiros: Once the mixture has completely cooled and set, lightly coat your palms with softened butter to prevent sticking. Using approximately one tablespoon of the mixture for each, gently roll the chocolate blend into uniform, small spherical shapes.
  6. Coat with Sprinkles: Delicately roll each chocolate ball through a shallow dish of chocolate sprinkles, ensuring complete and even coverage.
  7. Serve: Place the finished brigadeiros into individual paper or foil candy cups, creating an elegant and traditional Brazilian dessert presentation.

Notes

  • Make sure to stir continuously to avoid burning the mixture at the bottom of the pan.
  • Use unsweetened cocoa powder for the authentic rich chocolate flavor.
  • If mixture is too sticky to roll, chill it in the refrigerator for 10-15 minutes before shaping.
  • Butter your hands lightly to prevent sticking when rolling the brigadeiros.
  • Chocolate sprinkles can be substituted with crushed nuts or shredded coconut for alternative coatings.
