These classic butter cookies are simple to make with a rich buttery flavor and a tender, melt-in-your-mouth texture. Made from a one-bowl dough with basic ingredients like unsalted butter, sugar, vanilla, and flour, they bake quickly to a perfect golden edge. Optional sprinkles add a festive touch, making these cookies perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Cookie Dough

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup white granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2-3 tablespoons milk

Optional

  • Sprinkles for decoration

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven and Prepare Baking Sheet: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure even baking.
  2. Mix Butter and Sugar: In a large bowl or stand mixer, beat the softened unsalted butter and white granulated sugar together until the mixture is light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.
  3. Add Egg and Vanilla: Beat in the room temperature egg and pure vanilla extract until well combined, making sure not to overmix.
  4. Incorporate Dry Ingredients: Gradually add the all-purpose flour and a pinch of salt to the wet ingredients. Mix gently until just combined to avoid overworking the dough.
  5. Adjust Dough Consistency: Add milk one tablespoon at a time, mixing lightly after each addition, until the dough reaches a piping consistency that holds shape but is soft enough to pipe.
  6. Pipe the Cookies: Spoon the dough into a piping bag fitted with a 1/2-inch star tip. Pipe small circles onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart. Optionally, sprinkle tops with sprinkles.
  7. Chill Dough: Place the cookie sheet in the refrigerator for 15 minutes to chill and set the shape of the piped cookies.
  8. Bake the Cookies: Bake in the preheated oven for 10 minutes or until the edges just turn golden brown. Remove from oven and allow cookies to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack.

Notes

  • Using unsalted, high-quality butter like Challenge butter improves flavor and control over salt content.
  • Room temperature egg helps achieve a smooth mixture and consistent dough.
  • Do not overmix once flour is added to keep cookies tender.
  • Chilling the piped dough before baking helps cookies maintain their shape.
  • Milk amount may vary slightly depending on butter softness; add slowly to ensure piping consistency.
  • Optional sprinkles add fun and festive decoration but can be omitted.
