A classic Beef Shepherd’s Pie recipe featuring a savory ground beef and vegetable filling topped with creamy mashed potatoes, baked to golden perfection. Perfect as a hearty and comforting dinner.

Ingredients

Filling

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 cup carrots, diced
  • 1 cup peas
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Topping

  • 2 cups mashed potatoes (prepared)
  • 1 tablespoon butter (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) to prepare for baking the shepherd’s pie.
  2. Cook the beef and onions: In a skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef along with the chopped onion until the beef is fully cooked and the onions are soft. Drain any excess fat from the skillet.
  3. Add vegetables and simmer: Stir in the diced carrots and peas, then pour in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce. Season the mixture with salt and pepper to taste. Allow it to simmer gently for about 5 minutes so the flavors meld and the vegetables soften slightly.
  4. Assemble the pie: Transfer the beef and vegetable mixture into a greased baking dish. Spread the prepared mashed potatoes evenly over the top of the meat mixture.
  5. Add butter and bake: Dot the top of the mashed potatoes with the tablespoon of butter. Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 30 minutes until the potatoes develop a golden brown crust.
  6. Cool and serve: Remove the shepherd’s pie from the oven and let it cool slightly before serving to allow the filling to set.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, use homemade mashed potatoes with butter and cream.
  • You can substitute frozen mixed vegetables for carrots and peas if fresh are not available.
  • To make this dish gluten-free, ensure Worcestershire sauce is gluten-free or substitute with tamari sauce.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated in the oven.
  • Adding a sprinkle of shredded cheese on top before baking adds an extra layer of flavor.
